Basic computing skills for beginners

This publication is intended for people who wish to prepare for Module 5 - Database of the ECDL/ICDL Syllabus (Version 4.5) using Microsoft Access 2007. In Module 5 the candidate will learn about the main concepts of databases and be able to demonstrate the ability to use a database on a computer. The candidate will be able to create and modify tables, queries, forms and reports, and prepare outputs ready for distribution. The candidate will be able to relate tables and retrieve and manipulate database information using the query and sort tools available in the application.

This introductory course covers the basic concepts of the relational database package Filemaker Pro. Each participant will design a small database.

A set of 8 tutorials on FileMaker 7.0 from Studio eWorks for both Macintosh & PC. It is not necessary to have FileMaker installed.

This course gives a simple introduction to organizing your data in a relational database. It aims to explain the arranging of your data. It does not deal with specific relational databases systems such as Access, Oracle or SQL Server, or the technical tools that you would or could use to set up your database. The course aims to provide you with enough information to sit down and design your database, regardless of the database product that you intend to use. Exercises will be done on paper, without using computers.
